Chronic stress inhibits cognition and problem solving, compromises optimal immune system functioning, undermines physiological and psychological well-being, and erodes morale. The stress brought on by the various impacts of systemic bias against students of color, LGBTQ, disabled, and ethnic/cultural/religious minorities, undermines their ability to devote cognitive bandwidth to academic success. Educators must learn to harness the power of emotional intelligence, connection, empathy, and the neuroscience around empowerment and resilience. We will learn ways we can ameliorate the negative impacts of systemic bias on learning in a manner that maximizes inclusion and equity while positioning our students to be at their very best in our classrooms.
